Garth McQueen/CTAL/CTC 01/07/2005 08:46 AM Subject Pioli Papers - January 6, 2005 Happy New Year Mark...I think the champagne is still lingering in my eyes because I fell asleep last night thinking we had lost the game. I know you were there Mark, but how did we end up with more ends than points. I guess I must be more Japanese than I thought. I read from left to right and those lower numbers on the scoreboard don't really hit my line of vision. Oragoto dootachima. Hey, maybe that's what happens when you don't drink beer before the game. That used to be the normal behaviour but since MM has joined more regularly I see some behavioural change. All that aspertaine in Ice Tea is bad for Skips... makes their eyes all fuzzy and stuff. I can tell you Mark, that beer helped me last week and the lack of substance this week had me miss a few shots at the beginning. Luckily I was standing next to you so by the third I had consumed enough beer fumes from you to get me back in the game.. On to the game, stats first: CTFS - 3 Wally's Wonders - 3 Ends CTFS 4 Wally's Wonders 4 Lead - 90% Second 80% Third 70% Skip - had a good last shot. Mark, I believe Bruce correctly identified some underlying tension with Mauro due to the success of the other skips. A certain amount of pressure seemed to be there during this game (he should go to the pisser, relief is a good thing). Now it could have been that Mauro was just waking up at 5pm, he did relate he stayed awake all night and slept all day during his holidays. He was surprised to hear that Paul Martin was the Prime Minister of Canada!! Enough said... Although this team was a lower ranking team (32nd), they seemed to pick up the competitive spirit pretty quickly. I would say, starting with the coin toss. They all curled very well and probably because they had to. Our front end once again set up the ends to provide lots of opportunities for the back end to bring it home. We must live in a shack because not too much was brought home. Remember that end when we had 6 rocks in scoring position. Oh you don't...that's right.... you remember the opposition taking 1 point. Yes, they must have played very well. Once again Bruce was correct in saying we had control every end...that's a direct quote. Now my question would be...If we had control every end then how did we end up only winning 3 ends and taking 3 points. Maybe the control he spoke of was the eighth end that we didn't play or the strategic blank end earlier. This really tells me that we are now peaking and getting ready to dive towards C flight. The lack of oxygen at our current heights is beginning to impact our play. I think we are ready. I know Bruce was stunned by my inability to recognize the tie at the end of the game, but I really thought you had to have four curlers to win. Bruce's extreme willingness to sweep for the other team, had me thinking that 5 against 3 would always win and then when I starting thinking the head honcho was 1 for 14, no wonder I couldn't believe we ended up tied. Or...it could have been Alcohol Starvation. Mark: Good teams find a way to win, Teams that think they are good find a way to tie and Teams who know they are bad are called CTFS Rocks. ONWARD to Remax..... Mark Pioli/CTAL/CTC 01/07/2005 09:34 AM Subject Re: Pioli Papers - January 6, 2005 - Skip Controversy ?Link SKIP CONTROVERSY ? Many want Maruo Nuccitelli to be benched after his performance last night. But Clarky is sticking with his veteran skip, rather than handing over the reins to rookie skip Garth McQueen. McQueen stunned the curling team with an improbable win last week against superior competition Clarky stated "McQueen will not get the start as he lacks the game experience to be an everyday skip". "It's my team," Nuccitelli said when asked about an open competition with McQueen. Clarky said he will evaluate every player on the team in the next few weeks. stay tuned........ Speaking of Alcohol Starvation Next week the team will see something they have never seen before a sober lead. As you may or may not know I will be going to the Dominican Republic on January 22nd unfortunately an outbreak of Malaria has been reported and therefore I have to take precautions. I have to get my blood checked in the morning and then take a pill possible side effects are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased transaminase levels similar to symptoms Mauro experienced last night when his guard didn't make it over the hog line. Therefore adding alcohol to the mix probably won't be a great idea but then again maybe one beer wont hurt.
